We are offering a long term contract employment opportunity for a Paralegal in Poughkeepsie, New York. This role primarily focuses on handling legal correspondence, managing court calendars, and conducting research as part of our dynamic team.
Responsibilities:
• Handle incoming mail and packages from various delivery services
• Manage outgoing mail, scheduling pickups when necessary
• Answer and appropriately route incoming phone calls
• Regularly communicate with various court offices to confirm and acquire information related to calendars, claims, return dates, motions, etc.
• Keep office calendar updated with new return dates for ongoing cases
• Close and archive cases as needed
• Prepare and distribute Notices of Entry for supreme and Court of Claims decisions/judgments
• Liaise with the NYS Comptroller’s Office to obtain payment for favorable judgments
• Communicate with Parole and/or DOCCS regarding decisions in favor of the petitioner/claimant
• Obtain records related to inmate petitioners/claimants from Parole and/or DOCCS
• Request extensions on return dates from the court of claims and/or Supreme courts
• Schedule witnesses for deposition and trial, and arrange for court reporters
• Assemble exhibits for filings and prepare and file all associated court papers
• Develop affidavits, affirmations, and other motion-related papers
• Draft discovery demands, BOP demands, Medical demands, EBTs
• Prepare responses to bailments and develop correspondence and all relevant case materials for the record
• Research matters as assigned.
• Must possess strong communication skills for effective correspondence.
• Must have excellent research skills to assist in legal investigations and case preparations.
• Must be proficient in materials handling and document management.
• Should be capable of managing email correspondence effectively.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook for scheduling and email management is necessary.
• Knowledge of medical coverage and claim administration is beneficial.
• Must be adept at calendar management for scheduling important meetings and deadlines.
• Experience in discovery process, including notices, trials, motions, and depositions is required.
• Ability to handle legal documents such as exhibits, affidavits, and witness statements is necessary.
• Familiarity with USPS for sending and receiving legal correspondence is required.
• Ability to handle discovery responses in a timely and efficient manner is required.
• Knowledge of Supreme Court rules and procedures is beneficial.
• Experience with parole cases would be advantageous.
• Ability to schedule depositions and manage related logistics is necessary.
• Proficiency in photocopying and scanning documents for record-keeping and distribution is required.
